[Because Elliot is the smart one. And to be honest, Zack has zero clues what to do with the rock. To him, it's just a weird rock.

Well then again... He shakes it a bit.] It feels like there's something special about it. That makes it more than just a glowing paperweight, at least.

[He hands it to Elliot. There's an energy to it, like a slight static shock, when he passes it to Elliot.]

I can give it a shot?

[He feels that little shock when it gets passed over with him. Heck, the entire thing feels like it's buzzing with energy

Elliot stares at it. It looks like Quartz, but there's something ...different about it. Was this another form of it?]

Did it come with anything else? Like something that holds it?

Nope. Nothing at all. Just the marble and nothing else. Sorry...

[He shrugs a bit...]

Really? That's odd...

[While holding onto the materia in one hand, he'll reach into his pocket and dig out this weird device (though the cover's been painted over with blue and stars). Flipping it open, Zack can see there's a number of glowing gems in the slots. He looks between them and the materia for compare and contrast]

It looks like the quartz I got. But when I got them, I was given this device to help channel their power. But why wouldn't they do the same for you...?

That looks like a kid's toy...

[Whoops- that slipped out. He grins a bit playfully because of course he's joking.]

Mine looks bigger so maybe it needs a bigger device thing? Maybe they haven't sent it yet.

[Which means they're on the right track...? Sort of. Slotting materia into equipment is sort of the same thing in theory.]

Aha, I wouldn't underestimate it.

[Wow Zack. Elliot takes it in stride, and gives a smile as he pockets the ARCUS]

Maybe, but it's weird they didn't send it first. Though...maybe we could try to see if you can channel any magic without one? It could be a different type of quartz.

Hmm. Sure, let's give it a go, I guess.

[YEAH CASTING MAGIC. However that works... He takes the glowing gem back and rolls it around in his hand for a moment. He can still feel that strange static-y feeling against his fingers.]

Maybe you should show me how you cast a spell first.

Okay, sure.

[He takes a couple steps back, making sure he's in clear view]

What you do is...you feel that energy coming from the gem? You want clear your mind, and focus on that energy. Then you visualize drawing that energy out and then when it's ready- carry out the spell!

[Yeah, it's vague. But he'll demonstrate but casting his own spell, focusing for a moment before he lifts his hand and a orb of glowing water forms above his hand. ]

I-It's easier to understand once you try it yourself. Though it takes some practice to get used to.

[It seems all fine and dandy in theory. Just focus on what the energy is and let the energy form a spell by visualizing it in his mind... Alright. A piece of cake. Sure thing.]

Right... I got this.

[He tries to mimic Elliot, holding the rock out in his palm while trying to visualize something in his mind. Static electricity is all he can really think of, though. The green and white swirls around inside the rock like some sort of storm and it for a moment Zack's eyes do focus on it and he looks like he's lost in a trance.

... Then his eyebrows furrow.] Nothing's happening...

[Elliot meanwhile drops the ball of water into a snowdrift as he watches Zack carefully]

I-I saw some movement in the gem! It looked like a storm.

Yeah, I think I saw that that too but--

[Zack stops mid-sentence because the rock starts to feel different in his hand. That static-y feeling comes back and the glowing materia starts to melt into the sleeve of his jacket- or at least it seems that way.]

Ahh-- What the hell? [He's not in pain but he has no idea what's happening!]

[!!!!!!

Elliot's eyes grow VERY WIDE as he gets startled by this twist.]

Wh-What the-?! Th-That's not normal!

Oh god- Get it off-!

[Aaaaaannnndddd it's gone. Glowing green is coming from Zack's wrist. He immediately starts to flick his wrist around as if trying to get it off somehow.]

It's in me!

[In reality-- it's equipped. ~~and advent children says this is what happens~~]

[I had totally forgotten that from Advent Children. Elliot looks pretty freaked out because WHAT THE HECK JUST HAPPENED]

O-Okay! J-Just calm down!

[He says in a higher than normal voice that he usually gives before he starts to panic]

D-Do you feel any different?!

[Don't panic, Elliot! It's going to make Zack panic more!?

He yowls and pulls his sleeve up to check his wrist. He's about to scream about it more but realizes that he ... Doesn't actually feel any different. There's no pain or odd after effects. Just the strange glowing green circle on his wrist.]

It's-- ... No, it's fine. I think...?

[He's still probably dying for all he knows, though.]

[look Elliot panics easy!! In fact he's still staring with severe Concerns]

Y-You think?

[...]

Your wrist is glowing like the gem was.

I look like I got some radioactive version of gangrene.

[He runs a hand over his wrist to see if it feels abnormal but all he can feel is that static electricity tingle again. The gem really is inside his arm right now...

Which makes him think out loud,] Should I try a spell again?

Y-Yeah... [...] My "toy" doesn't seem so bad anymore, huh?

[Elliot.]

M-Might as well? I dunno what else to do.

[SAVAGE]

Alright, alright, I take it back. Geeze.

[He does what Elliot suggested before- Being concentrating on something in his mind and trying to make something happen. This time he feels a strange foreign energy inside his body. He focuses on that static-electricity feeling and...

Suddenly magic is forming in his hand. A large crackling sphere of thunder!!]

Aaaaghhh--!! [And of course he drops it in his surprise and it explodes at their feet between them. At least it's a tiny explosion!]

[HE'S A BABY BROTHER, savage is in his nature. But he just smiles and laughs sheepishly at the apology. It's appreciated!

As for the spell? Elliot makes a surprised little gasp and jumps back a little, so the explosion happens without any harm coming to him. But while Zack is freaked?

Elliot is thrilled. He claps his hands together and beams excitedly]

You did it!

[Zack's looking half way between shocked and confused. But luckily Elliot's enthusiasm seems to bring him down from it. He laughs awkwardly and stares at his glowing wrist.]

Guess... Guess I did.

[He might not be as talented at Elliot (and he never will be) but honestly it feels good being about to do something unique and different. To feel a little stronger.]

Yeah! Alright! Magic! I did the thing! [His grin gets bigger.]

Hehe, yeah! You did the thing!

[Elliot meanwhile? Feels...surprisingly happy. He could've felt jealous that someone else had a power like his-but instead? It felt nice. His cousin had magic like he did, maybe he wasn't such an odd duck after all.]

And it was lightning too! That's impressive! It took my a few months before I got my first lightning spell.

Yeah? Lightning magic. I can't wait to see the irritated look on Olivia's face. Haven't seen her get something this wicked.

[He feels triumphant, accomplished. He still has no damn clue how he's going to get the rock out of his arm but he'll think about that later.]

Still wouldn't mind something like a giant sword but hey, this'll do for now.

Eheh, really? Then I bet she'll be jealous!

[Yeah about that...Elliot has no idea either welp]

Why a giant sword?

Why not? [Zack makes a slashing motion as if he's actually holding a sword of some sort.]

Natty's got a sword. I want one too. But something that really destroys.
